After earning degrees in engineering and theology, Joel Vandenbrink held managerial roles in diverse industries before starting his own brewery. Beyond his professional endeavors, Joel Vandenbrink is actively involved with the Northwest Chapter of the Crohns and Colitis Foundation, an organization that funds research studies related to diagnostics and treatment protocols for inflammatory bowel disease (IBD).
IBD is an umbrella term for chronic conditions that cause inflammation in the digestive system. While these disorders are not curable, treatment can mitigate symptoms and improve quality of life. IBD treatment options vary on the severity and location of the issue. The success of the treatment also depends on the individual's lifestyle changes and the outcome of the surgery. The mildest cases are often treated with anti-inflammatories, such as steroids or immunosuppressant drugs.
Some forms of IBD are managed with temporary liquid diets. Over time, inflammation may lead to blockages or restrictions in the bowel. When the disease progresses to this state, surgery may be needed. According to the Crohn’s Colitis Foundation, 7 out of 10 patients with Crohn’s will need to undergo surgery.
